Senior Events: A Night In Casablanca
10:34 PMIf you've never been to the Boston Public Library (the old branch, not the new modernist one), you really should. You don't even have to look at the books, if you're not a bibliophile like me - just bask in the glory of the incredible architecture.
There's something really beautiful about going to the Boston Public Library at night. Everything is illuminated with light, so you can still see all the contours of the vaults and the intricacies of the tiles, but you can also see the lights of the city outside the windows and enjoy the quiet solace of the dark courtyards. Although, I will say, when I went this past Friday it was anything but quiet.
Like in high school, seniors celebrate their, well, senior-ness, by holding grandiose events periodically throughout the year. The MIT equivalent of prom is Senior Ball, except with a lot less awkward grinding and dancing and a lot more hanging out and taking photos. Our Senior Ball was held at the Boston Public Library, which was pretty much the only reason I dragged my friends out with me to go.
I really love this building.
Although the weather was chillier than I would've liked considering the flimsiness that is nice fancy dresses, it was still pretty fun! I saw friends and took photos with them and ate the free food, which was less nice than I'd have liked it to be but also, who am I to complain. It's free food. They did, however, take away the free food very early and I never got to have dessert, even though Julie and I went on the hunt for it for like an hour.
Also, the cheese and charcuterie platter? That cheese that was disguised as cheese cubes - it was string cheese. Don't lie to me. I know my cheeses.

I love these two for being there to keep me sane for
the past four years!

I will say, it did damper my mood a bit that I am still too young to drink legally in the U.S. Come on guys. I'm Canadian. I've been allowed to drink for the past two years in my country and yet I still have a few more weeks to wait! Look at those classy wine glasses my friends are holding...
No fancy event is complete without taking a photo with some of my ADT ladies. We took one two years ago at Ring Delivery to commemorate getting through half of MIT - we couldn't leave without getting another to commemorate the - almost - completion of MIT!

What I enjoyed most about Senior Ball was just the fact that it was an opportunity for all of us to stop and take a breather. We're coming to the end of our last semester at MIT, and we're all working on final projects or studying for exams - or both - and we've spent the last four years racing at a million miles an hour to get to the finish line. We're all tired, we've all burnt out at some point, and I think most importantly, we've all forgotten that it's okay to take a break and stop and do things that are fun. This was that opportunity - take a few hours out of our Friday, do nothing other than pamper ourselves and play dress up and be fancy.

And, because Jenny and I are total ADT nerds, we posed in one of our dance
partner poses. Sneak peek of our final performances, ever?!

So despite the slight shortcomings of the event - the food, the entertainment which I found pretty meh - thank you, Senior Ball Committee, for giving me an opportunity to take a breather and de-stress.
