Whim of the Week: Convertible Romper

6:00 PM

Two of my favorite clothing pieces are my convertible dresses that I bought off of Ideeli, despite the fact that neither of those pieces are currently in the same country as me (I travel and leave things when they don't fit in my suitcase, and unfortunately those get left behind at my parents' house). I think that the dress is ingenious - one clothing piece, infinite ways of wearing? Sign me up!

However, there were two things that I wanted to change when I started my project - first, I wanted it to be a romper. I couldn't justify making another dress, since I already had two that I could easily ask my dad to bring me next time I saw him, and I also wanted the challenge of trying to make shorts since they were a clothing item I had yet to tackle. (I have also not done pants. Pants are intimidating.) Second, I wanted to add a bandeau to the entire ensemble so that a bra could easily be worn with it.

I began the project with some silky emerald green jersey that I had found at a fabric store around a year ago. I had planned on making it into a dress, but I decided this was a more exciting project to use it for. Since it's a 4-way stretch knit, I didn't have to worry about dealing with zippers or closures.

I then referenced this burdastyle pattern and a couple other quick google searches for convertible dress patterns to actually cut the fabric. I didn't actually print out the pattern, since I tend to do things on a whim - I actually used a pair of flowy shorts that I already own to cut out the pattern for the shorts, and the straps and the bandeau top were pretty easy to cut since they were all just rectangles (I altered the bandeau later to actually fit my shape).

To add some visual interest I added pleats to the top of the shorts (2 to each side, front and back, for a total of 8). This was also challenging since I had never done pleats before, and I was also eyeballing the location for the pleats because I was too lazy to measure things (you'll find that this is a trend with me). I used a quick running stitch on my machine to secure the pleats, but I took those out after I sewed the shorts to the bandeau.

I then had some issues figuring out what piece to sew to what first: despite there being only 5 pieces - 4 after the shorts were sewn together - but after I figured it out (straps first, bandeau last) it was quite easy to finish up. I didn't end up hemming any of the edges for two reasons - first because it wasn't necessary as the material is jersey, and second because I tried it on the shorts and really hated how it stiffened the bottom edge and made the shorts less flowy (if that makes sense).

Me wearing my romper in a few different ways, with and without the
bandeau! The shorts kind of ride up which is unfortunate, but nothing
a little tugging can't fix.

I'm quite proud of how the project turned out - I learned how to make shorts (kind of) and pleats (also kind of), and I now have a new addition to my wardrobe in a color that I don't think I actually own!
