The Coffee Buzz: New York, New York!

1:19 PM

I left off last week's Coffee Buzz saying that I was in the Big Apple, so obviously this week I'm focusing on that vacation!

Friday night, Alyssa and I decided to go to Times Square because I was on the hunt for some distressed skinny jeans and I wanted to go look in the huge Forever 21 there. (We actually just really wanted to go to the M&M store). While I didn't find jeans, I did find these pretty great #USA sunglasses and shoelaces, which I immediately purchased for Catherine and Veronica. We also got a 1.5 lb bag of assorted M&Ms, including pretzel M&Ms (our favorite), jumbo M&Ms, Birthday Cake M&Ms (these were alright, I wasn't a huge fan but Alyssa liked them), and dark chocolate M&Ms.

The subway ride home was an experience - Alyssa and I got a death threat from a hobo in our car. He had been staring at us for a while across the train, and then he moved to sit behind us and started yelling threats in our ears about how he was going to kill us in between a series of other threats that just sounded a lot like mumbles. The other members in the car just watched us. Needless to say, it was pretty terrifying, and while I stayed calm in the train (we got off at the next stop, which was also the stop we needed to get off at) I broke down when we got home (I'm a crybaby, I know).

Saturday, Alyssa and I went to the Strand to look for a book they didn't have, and then we went to the Brooklyn Bridge! I had never been and the structure was beautiful, albeit rather crowded. I had a little bit of an architecture geek-out at the subway stop (those vaulted ceilings, man - why don't they make stops like that in Boston?) and at the bridge, which Alyssa was pretty amused by.

We also went and had dinner with Natasha, another long-time friend that I hadn't seen or spoken to in 3 years. We went to Joe's Shanghai (much to the jealousy of Catherine) and had some pretty great soup dumplings. I can't wait to go home to China and have the real deal.

We spent a pretty calm night in after we sent Natasha off to the train station. We watched The Lego Movie (it's awesome. I only work in black, and sometimes, very, very dark grey), which Alyssa hadn't seen, and then spent the rest of the night doing work because we're super cool like that.

Sunday morning we spent at the High Line, another of New York's tourist destinations that neither of us had been to. Because of the heat, the area was actually pretty empty, and again, the view was stunning. There was a lot of really interesting architecture along the line, all of which I very dutifully took photos of!

TBLR: 1. Brooklyn Bridge station had this really awesome vaulted
ceiling; 2. Brooklyn Bridge; 3. Me at the Brooklyn Bridge; 4. View
from the Brooklyn Bridge (that smog though); 5. The Standard at the
High Line; 6. Alyssa and I at the High Line; 7. View alongside the High
Line; 8: Graphic windows and awesome sculpture along the High Line
Other things that happened this week:

Estelle and I took a ridiculous amount of photos of the process of putting up the study of the Collier Memorial, and then I consolidated it into a stop motion!

I got super sick from my project manager at work, so I took Monday off and basically had a 5 day weekend, which was pretty great - despite being bedridden for part of it.

I switched to working on the Audi project during the week because they needed extra hands for model building, although there was a lack of material so I ended up sitting around a lot....

Boston's Fourth of July fireworks got switched to the Third of July because of the forecasted thunderstorm, and I watched them from a friend's room. They were quite nice, although growing up in China I didn't think they were that spectacular - I've been spoiled by Chinese New Year, setting off my own fireworks, and watching musical fireworks on a near monthly basis.

The thunderstorm that followed, however, was quite fun because my friend and I just watched people get caught in the downpour from the shelter of his room.
